Australia's Ashes Squad Announced - Ashes 2010

Australian Squad For Vodafone Ashes Series
Australia have announced their 17-man squad for the forthcoming Ashes which is about to start on 25th November in Brisbane.

Australia Test squad: Ricky Ponting (captain), Michael Clarke (vice-captain), Doug Bollinger, Xavier Doherty, Callum Ferguson, Brad Haddin, Ryan Harris, Nathan Hauritz, Mike Hussey, Ben Hilfenhaus, Mitchell Johnson, Simon Katich, Usman Khawaja, Marcus North, Peter Siddle, Steven Smith, Shane Watson
Australia apparently have a bigger squad than England scheduled for the Ashes Series which includes new faces in the form of young batsmen Callum Ferguson and Usman Khawaja, spinner Xavier Doherty and fast bowler Ryan Harris. Selectors though will pin down the sqaud to final 12 or 13 man group before Australians arrive at Brisbane for the first Ashes test match.

Doherty who already has played some one-dayers recently was a surprising entry to the squad and now is the third spinner after Nathan Hauritz and Steve Smith. Doug Bollinger, Simon Katich and Harris are included in the squad despite injuries. Khawaja would be Australia's first Test cricketer of Muslim faith if he makes the final line-up. Khawaja was given preference former opener Phil Hughes who apparently needed more runs under his belt before he could be included in the squad

Australia's Chairman of selectors Andrew Hilditch on Phil Hughes: " His average of 51.25 in seven tests is disappointing. The other side of the coin is we're really happy with our opening partnership and Phil's primarily trying to crack into that spot. We would consider him in a middle order position but at the moment we think the two young players from Australia A Khawaja and Ferguson we picked are in a bit better form and ready to go."
"I want to look at the next round of domestic Sheffield Shield matches and the Australia A game against England on Wednesday before trimming the squad."
"From a logistical point of view and with these important games yet to be completed, we have named an extended squad of 17 with 10 days before the first Test begins"

Australia's vice-captain Michael Clarke is expected to recover in time before the start of the first Ashes test in Brisbane. He had suffered some back stiffness during the recently completed Sheffield Shield game for New South Wales. Meanwhile Harris remains a doubt as he is still suffering from a chronic knee injury and will be given some time off to fully recover from the injury. Simon Katich has been passed fit and did say that his hand felt good after hitting a knock of 94 or Randwick Petersham

Recent test series havent been good for Australia after drawing their series against Pakistan which took place on English soil followed by 2-0 loss against India in India.
