NYSN Statement on Antisemitism at Columbia University
While peaceful political protest is a bedrock principle of First Amendment rights, the situation at Columbia has deteriorated to the point where vile and explicit antisemitism has become part and parcel of the ongoing protests. Jewish students are experiencing harassment and vilification. Despite claims of a campus lockdown, Democratic Socialist-affiliated New York City Council members without student IDs were allowed to performatively pose for photos on campus and contribute to the overall decline in discourse.
While there are those who suggest the most overt of the antisemitism only comes from outside agitators, the student organizations have not made a public effort to disavow these actions or distance.
To elide the aggressive antisemitism and the acts of physical intimidation that characterizes a not insignificant portion of the protestors’ rhetoric and actions, either in defense of First Amendment principles or in defense of the students’ views on the Middle East, it to suggest that Jewish students’ right to study and live in an environment that is not hostile to them is can be disregarded.
Columbia must not only denounce the antisemitism with equivocation, it must take concrete action to ensure its campuses and streets surrounding it are safe for Jewish students. Or else it has surrendered to the mob.
We stand in solidarity with the Jewish students and staff of Columbia.
Wall of Shame
After the worst massacre of Jews since the Holocaust, many of New York’s elected leaders stood up and held Hamas terrorists accountable for their heinous actions. It was the just and humane thing to do.
Unfortunately, not everyone could take that step. Some stayed silent, while others tried to straddle the fence and stand with both terrorists and the terrorized in equal measure. Some officials even went so far as to justify Hamas’ brutality. They have had plenty of time to do the right thing, but they have chosen not to.
Let them know: When you can’t take a stand against terror, you do not stand for New York!
“The NYC chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America’s revolting display glorifies the murder, rape, abduction, and terrorism of Jews by Hamas. The shameful actions of this known terrorist organization should not be tolerated by anyone in civil society, and anyone who stands in “solidarity” with them deserves the scorn of every true New Yorker who believes in the dignity and rights of all people. NYSN further calls on New York state and local elected officials to condemn this rally and to not participate in this celebration of evil.”
