Audubon members Paul Watson and Erich Hetzel are onboard the Greenpeace ship Arctic Sunrise conducting a seabird survey on its voyage to Bermuda. What do they see on their first morning at sea - a Gray Catbird - flying northeast. Maybe it is coming to Bermuda. We wish them a safe voyage and calm seas, but not too calm so they will see more seabirds.

Join us for a visit to our unique Sears Cave Nature Reserve. Alison Copeland will update us about the status of the nearly extinct Governor Laffan’s Fern that is growing inside the cave and teach us about the other ferns that are growing inside the cave. If time permits, we will do a short walk through the surrounding woodland.

Mulberry trees are now full of delicious berries and a great place to look for spring migrants. This immature male Summer Tanager was seen in a Mulberry tree at the Vesey Nature Reserve. It is hard to imagine that this splotchy bird of many colours will turn into a beautiful red adult. Check out this webinar from the American Bird Conservancy on February 21st at 5pm AT to learn more about the Cundinamarca Antpitta’s fascinating history and conservation efforts. You’ll hear from Peter Kaestner, the first person to officially document this species; Nathalia Otero, whose nonprofit Fundación Camaná established a new reserve to protect the Antpitta; and Eliana Fierro-Calderón, ABC’s International Project Officer.
The Cundinamarca Antpitta’s first documented observation was in 1989, when renowned birder Peter Kaestner heard an unfamiliar call while birding. He recorded the sound, played it back, and 45 minutes later, an antpitta hopped into view, unlike any other in Colombia. The species was officially recognized in 1992 and listed as Endangered in 2014. Today, there are no more than 800 individuals in its highland cloud forest habitat.

Through its Bird Habitat Protection Fund, ABC supports the creation of reserves across Latin America and the Caribbean that conserve vulnerable species like the Cundinamarca Antpitta. Working with 59 partners, ABC has supported the protection of over 1 million acres of land, which are home to nearly 3,000 species of birds.
