The Great Give® 2024 – Help Us Preserve Open Space

The Bethany Land Trust is participating in the Great Give® 2024, a community-wide giving event benefiting Greater New Haven’s nonprofits. It runs over two days from 8:00 a.m. on May 1 to 8:00 p.m. on May 2.

Last year, we were able to expand the Van Epps Preserve and we entered into an agreement to purchase a 38.5 -acre property off Russell Road with the help of many contributors throughout the year and grants from supporting foundations.

In 2024, we plan to continue to identify and explore the possibility of preserving new open space in Town. When an opportunity arises, we want to be ready to act swiftly with access to the funds needed for an acquisition. The generous support of our members and donors helps make this possible.  In addition, we continue our stewardship activities, trail maintenance, monthly trail hikes and community outreach with our educational programs.

How about you? Can you support our preservation and stewardship activities?  This is a perfect opportunity for you to support some of our new, exciting plans.

As a private, charitable, non-profit corporation (not a local or state government agency), we rely nearly entirely on charitable donations to fund the acquisition of properties for preservation and stewardship activities. Help us fund our plans for 2024 by giving generously.

Monthly Land Trust Trail Hikes

Here are the details of our first hike in this series:

Sunday, April 7, 1 – 3 PM:  Signs of Spring Hike – Location: Woodward Nature Preserve

Join us in exploring the wonders of early spring and understanding the importance of preserving our natural landscapes for future generations. We’ll look for spring ephemerals, native wildflowers that emerge and flower in early spring and complete their life cycle before the forest canopy shades them out. Despite their short lives, ephemerals such as trout lily, wood anemone and hepatica play a crucial role in the ecosystem by providing food for pollinators like bumblebees and butterflies. We’ll also learn to recognize and address the presence of invasive plants that threaten this delicate ecosystem balance.

Guide: Ali Beres-Nork is an Environmental Science teacher at Amity High School holding an MS in Environmental Science from Montana State University and is a certified Connecticut Master Naturalist.
