Pro Basketball Coaching Tips

Basketball coaching gets under your skin and in your blood and you can’t seem to get it out of your head. You spend your spare time trying to work out how to fix what’s going wrong with your team and how to capitalize on what’s going right. You dream of that little give-n-go play that worked perfectly in the last game, and wake up with a new play scribbled on the notebook next to your bed. You constantly daydream about the things that you need to do to prepare for the next game.

Sound familiar? Welcome to the world of coaching basketball.

There is always so much that needs to be done, so many ways to approach coaching this game, so many aspects to consider if you want your team to succeed. And it is particularly tough if you are a new coach, trying to figure things out for the first time, or if you are the only coach for your team – no assistants, no help, and trying to pull it all together on your own.

You’ll find lots of resources on this site to help you along your way…

Check out these pages for tips on how to coach your players on Shooting Skills, Dribbling drills basketball, Passing Skills, or Basic Offensive Moves like the pick ‘n roll and give ‘n go. And let’s not forget our big men; they need to know how to execute some Post Moves if they want to get on the scoreboard! Along with the skills we need drills to match – check out some Shooting Drills, Dribbling Drills, some great Passing Drills, Vertical Jump Training Program and for your big men, Post Drills and Rebounding Drills. And of course, we can’t forget those critical Defensive Drills – after all, “offense wins games, but defense wins championships!” Lots of basketball plays to choose from – choose the offensive plays that suit your team from the ever-growing list of Offensive Strategies; add in a press break or in-bounds play from the Special Situations page, and then turn the focus over to defense and check out the defensive plays, presses and more found on the Defensive Strategies page

And that’s just the most obvious aspects of basketball coaching. Motivating the team, developing individual players, organizing and managing your tryouts, your practices, your season, helping your players continue to excel in the off season – there is so much to do to be a successful basketball coach, and every season you learn something new!

There is always more to learn and more to accomplish, different tactics and different strategies to try. And every year your team changes, as new players come in with different skill sets and different abilities, and you need to adjust to that. And there is always room for improvement.

Think of coaching basketball not by seasons, but as an ongoing process – one very long season that lasts 35 years, with some busier times and some more relaxed times. Constant development, with you, the coach, developing and learning along with your players.

That’s what Better Basketball Coaching aims to do – to help inform your coaching development, so you can improve your teams so they can play better basketball!
