Free Cessna T50 Crane “Bamboo Bomber” with Restoration Contract with Big Sky Stearman. This is serial number 0112 out of 6,000 built. It was delivered to the Royal Canadian Air Force in Cessna’s first delivery of 600 aircraft as the Crane in 1941. It had been stored in the Idaho desert for 40 years. Consequently the metal work and tubing is in good condition, but the plane would need all new wood. We are in a position to build the 42’ wood wing and the empennage for the airplane. It has a current Registration and Airworthiness Certificate.
It began when Rev. Claude G. Pike brought home a derelict crop-duster in 1977. Claude and his two sons, John and Ted, had always been fascinated by antique aircraft and it was their dream to restore one. Claude, a wooden boat builder, quickly had a set of wings built for the project, but before he could get the wings on their Stearman the wings were sold to an eager buyer. After this scenario repeated a few times Claude realized opportunity was knocking. They created Big Sky Stearman and began providing Stearman wood services to Stearman owners across the globe.
John eventually took the helm and has led the restoration of many different vintage aircraft over the years. John is the ultimate aviation enthusiast and pilot (ATP and Flight Instructor). He loves restoring these old planes along side Big Sky’s small crew of talented craftsmen, craftswomen and mechanics. John’s own family, wife Alinda and children Marianne, Becki and Johnny, have been vital in Big Sky’s success as well.
We at Big Sky Stearman hope to continue the tradition of servicing these classic birds long into the future.
