Driving Test

Theory Test

The theory test is made up of two parts; multiple choice and hazard perception. You'll need to pass both parts at the same time to pass the theory test.

In your theory test you will be presented with one case study where you will be required to answer 5 questions that are related to the scenario displayed on screen. The multiple choice test is a touch screen computer test where you'll be asked 50 questions in 57 minutes. The pass mark for the multiple choice part is 43 out of 50.

The hazard perception part is a computer based test to assess how well you can recognise and respond to hazards on the road. The test consists of 14 video clips, each lasting about one minute. The clips feature various types of hazards. The earlier the developing hazard is seen, and a response made, the higher the score. The pass mark for the hazard perception test for car drivers is 44 out of 75.

Practical Test

The driving test has been designed to see if you can drive safely, independently and can demonstrate your knowledge of The Highway Code throughout your drive.

Before your test begins your examiner will ask you to read a number plate at a set distance, 20 metres. If you pass this you will be able to continue with your test.

You will then be asked 2 vehicle safety questions, known as 'show me, tell me' questions. You'll be asked the 'tell me' question at the start of your test and the 'show me' question while you are driving.

You will drive on various roads and in various driving conditions following directions by the Examiner.

You will be required to do one of the following manouvres:

The Examiner will tell you which of these you have to do. You will also be asked to pull over at the side of the road and moving off again. You may also be asked to carry out an emergency stop.

You will be asked to drive indepently during your test for about 20 minutes. The aim of this is to test your ability to make their own decisions whilst driving. This will either be by following directions from a Sat Nav or from road signs (the Examiner whill tell you which you need to do). If you are asked to follow a Sat Nav it will be supplied and already set up by the Examiner.

Don't worry if you go the wrong way at any point in your test; the Examiner will help you get back on route. You will not be given a driving fault and you can still pass your test as long as you do it safely. The Examiner will only stop your test if your driving is a danger to other road users.

You will pass your practical test if you have 15 or less minor driving faults and don't obtain any serious or dangerous faults.

Think of your practical test as an assessment of your driving to make sure you're safe to driving on your own. All our courses are tailered to suit the individual needs of pupils, ensuring you can achieve your goal in  passing your test and becoming a confident, courteous driver!
