The Kentucky division of the Horsemen's Benevolent & Protective Association represents more than 6,000 owners and trainers who race at Kentucky's five Thoroughbred tracks. We negotiate among the most favorable contracts for horsemen in the country, provide benevolence, educational and recreational programs for backside workers and are a leading advocate for horsemen's rights.

Trainer Kenny McPeek and jockey Brian Hernandez, who both make the Louisville are their home, will team to try to win their first Kentucky Derby and/or Kentucky Oaks in two weeks. Kenny reflects on his go-to rider for about a decade.
That's what trainer Kenny McPeek told us about his Kentucky Oaks filly Thorpedo Anna (shown at beginning of video), Oaklawn Park's Grade 2 Fantasy Stakes winner whose only defeat in four starts was a second in Churchill Downs' Golden Rod. Kenny also tells us the source of the name. He also talks about Band of Gold, Oaklawn's Martha Washington Stakes winner who will run in the Oaks if she gets in (Plan B is the Edgewood on grass).
We catch up with trainer Kenny McPeek, the Lexington product and longtime Louisville resident who will seek to win his first Kentucky Derby with G1 Arkansas Derby third-place finisher Mystik Dan (who won the Southwest impressively) and Common Defense, if he gets in. McPeek's best Derby finish was a second with Tejano Run in 1995.
D. Wayne Lukas, the 88-year-old Kentucky Derby dean and the most transformative trainer in at least modern horse racing, was at Churchill Downs Monday morning watching his Derby contender Just Steel (second in the Arkansas Derby) and Oaks filly Lemon Muffin (seventh in the Fantasy after winning the Honeybee) jog around the track in their first training session since shipping in from Arkansas' Oaklawn Park. "The Coach" talked about trying to win the Derby not for a personal fifth but for his owners, young jockey Keith Asmussen, who will ride both horses in America's most important races for 3-year-olds and for 3-year-old fillies, how the Derby has changed and more (including still getting on the pony every day at age 88 1/2). Video starts off with Just Steel, accompanied by Lukas on his pony, and Lemon Muffin heading to the track shortly after it opened for training at 5:30 a.m.
We chat with industry entrepreneur Kyle Zorn, a founding partner in Legion Bloodstock, which purchased Honor Marie as a Keeneland September yearling ($40,000) as part of their Legion Racing group. After Honor Marie's first victory, Kerry and Alan Ribble bought out the other partners in the group. Zorn also is a good friend of Whit Beckman, and he weighs in on the trainer. Note: Honor Marie, who is a colt, is named for the Ribbles' granddaughter. Honor Marie's dam is Dame Marie. Local note: Zorn, who now lives in Lexington, is a Louisville product and St. Xavier grad who some in the media will recall was an assistant to former trainer Pat Byrne.
Omar Trevino, a Lexington-based bloodstock agent, consultant, breeder, was involved in buying Kentucky Derby contender Honor Marie's dam (Dame Marie) and breeding Honor Marie, facilitated his sale, then was part of the partnership that bought back into the colt last December, after he had won Churchill Downs' Kentucky Jockey Club.
We talk with trainer Whit Beckman after Louisiana Derby runner-up Honor Marie worked a half-mile in 48.80 seconds in company at Churchill Downs. Inquiring minds want to know dept.: Find out why Whit might be the only member of the famed D. Wayne Lukas training tree not to use white bridles on his horses. Video starts with b-roll of the work. Turfway's John Battaglia winner Encino made the most of his first start on dirt, leaving all the way under Florent Geroux to take Keeneland's $400,000 Stonestreet Lexington Stakes by three-quarters of a length over The Wine Steward. We speak with winning trainer Brad Cox and Geroux, as well as Mike Maker, trainer of The Wine Stewart, who was making his first start since he was a close second Oct. 7 in Keeneland's Grade 1 Claiborne Breeders' Futurity.
No interview but plenty of b-roll of Turfway Park's Jeff Ruby winner Endlessly working at Churchill Downs for what could be a start in the Kentucky Derby - or for the American Turf the same day. Trained by Michael McCarthy Endlessly worked a half-mile in 49 seconds Saturday morning at 7:30 in company with Yellow Card, who won a maiden race on the Jeff Ruby undercard. Endlessly was clocked galloping out five-eighths of a mile in 1:02.20. The Amerman Racing colt has never raced on dirt, his only defeat in six starts coming in last fall's Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf.
