Assessing the interactions between COVID-19 and influenza

In 1859, a wealthy cattle breeder who enjoyed hunting introduced European Rabbits - bunnies to some - into the Australian continent. With time, the rabbit population exploded, devastated the fragile ecosystem, and the Aussies looked to science for answers.
Scientists introduced the myxoma virus to rabbit watering holes to dramatically reduce Australia’s rabbit population. Myxomatosis is a disease caused by the Myxoma virus, a poxvirus in the genus Leporipoxvirus, that is usually fatal to European Rabbits. The myxoma virus can enter some human cells, but it cannot complete viral replication once inside the host cells. As a result, Myxomatosis is not considered a zoonotic disease (viruses that can be spread from animal populations to human populations).
Within two years of the virus’s release, the continent slowly recovered from the rabbit plague. However, as rabbits became more resistant (and they quickly reproduced), the viral strains responded by becoming less virulent. Once again the rabbit population exploded across the continent. Such is the tug-of-war between viral agent and host. The immune systems in the healthier rabbit populations, or those conferred with unique genetic advantages, were better equipped to survive the viral onslaught. Charles Darwin would suggest that these individuals were “fitter” than the rest of the general population.
Are we witnessing this “fitness” trend with COVID-19 survivors? With some exceptions, young adults are reporting mild sysmptoms from SARS-CoV-2 infections, while the very young, older, or compromised individuals may experience life-threatening sysmptons (some require the use of medical ventilators to remain alive). Thus far, approximately 34.1 million cases and 1.02 million deaths have been reported worldwide. Contrast the COVID-19 pandemic with the Spanish flu of 1918. Most influenza outbreaks disproportionately kill the very young and the very old, with a higher survival rate for those in between, but the Spanish flu pandemic resulted in a higher than expected mortality rate for young adults (unlike the SARS-CoV-2). Of the 50 million people who perished from the Spanish flu, nearly half of the dead were adults aged 20 to 40.

A Message from the National Association of Manufacturers

Manufacturers know what is at stake if our reopening as a country is not successful: our economy will again be decimated. More jobs will be lost. And more lives will be endangered. While there are several ways to responsibly limit or stop the spread of COVID-19, which manufacturers across America are undertaking, including social distancing, washing hands and using a variety of PPE, the public’s adoption of face coverings in public spaces is the simplest, and a powerfu way to care for others and be a part of the solution in defeating this virus.
