Applications are now open for the Shelby White & Leon Levy Archival Assistance Grants Initiative to help historic preservation-related not-for-profit organizations and similar institutions identify and maintain their archival resources related to stories of historic preservation. The application period closes on May 1, 2024.

Welcoming Our New Executive Director
The New York Preservation Archive Project is pleased to announce that Emily Kahn will join as Executive Director beginning July 24, 2023. Join us in welcoming Emily Kahn, who will build upon the success of Brad Vogel, Matthew Coody, Liz McEnaney, Rudie Hurwitz, Sarah Sher and others who have demonstrated the value of the organization’s work during their time at the helm of NYPAP and continue to serve the field in new roles in important ways.

Saving Papers
A major part of what we do here at the Archive Project centers on collecting and finding homes for key archives of preservation history. For example, in 2019, Executive Director Brad Vogel, Jeffe Fellow Josie Naron, Archive Project founder Anthony Wood, and Diego Robayo of Historic Districts Council sorted through the late Jack Taylor's papers!

Preservation History Database
Our preservation history database is rife with the stuff that makes up the history of preservation. Detailing key battles, figures, policies, and places in New York City's preservation history, this is an incredible resource for researchers. With new entries constantly being added, this "encyclopedia" of NYC Preservation history is a must visit!

Oral Histories: Richard George
He bought his first bungalow in Far Rockaway in 1982. In 1984, neighbors Betzie Park White, Roger White, and Carole Ann Lewis started Beachside Bungalow Preservation Association to focus on restoration of the bungalows, and George joined the board of the organization in 1985. With grant funding that he was able to secure over the ensuing years, Beachside Bungalow Preservation created educational and training programs for youth, organized house tours with the Queens Historical Society, and engaged in innovative habitat restoration.

The New York Preservation Archive Project is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to documenting, preserving, and celebrating the history of historic preservation in New York City.

Recognizing the instructive and inspirational importance of this history to the continued health, success and growth of preservation in our City, the Archive Project hopes to bring these stories to light through public programs, oral histories, and providing public access to information. The Archive Project is devoted to celebrating neglected narratives of New York historic preservation using the archives that hold these stories.
