5pm AEDT, 29 January UNRWA funding on hold On Friday, the US put on hold its funding of UNRWA, the UN’s dedicated Palestinian refugee agency. This was followed on Shabbat by Australia and four other countries doing the same. The move came after UNRWA fired nine of its staff because they participated in the 7 […]

11:45am AEDT, 25 January The last couple of days has been extraordinarily hard for Israel and its supporters. On Monday, 21 soldiers were killed when a Palestinian anti-tank missile appeared to detonate explosives in a building that the IDF was preparing to demolish. 11:00 am AEDT, 22 January 2024 Your correspondents here at ZFA HQ have noticed that, in this entire war, the one actor that hasn’t really paid any price at all is Iran. Iran has funded and trained Hamas, Hezbollah and the Houthis, all of which are attacking Israel, or Israeli targets. According to this Reuters […]

Yesterday marked 100 days since Hamas forces invaded Israel and carried out massacres, torture, rape and other depravities, and kidnapped hundreds of Israelis. Over 100 remain in Hamas captivity. ZFA statement on resumption of funding to UNRWA

The Zionist Federation of Australia is concerned by the Government’s resumption of aid to UNRWA. ZFA President Jeremy Leibler said, “There is very clearly a dire humanitarian situation unfolding in Gaza, and we support the provision of additional aid, however, we are deeply concerned that a resumption of funding to UNRWA may be wholly counterproductive. 🇮🇱 Since 7 October, we have seen a real awakening in the Jewish community. So many people have been witness to the surge in antisemitism online and in our streets, and the unfair treatment Israel receives in parts of our media. We have seen a desire from the grassroots level to engage, both individually and corporately, to ensure that our story is told.

Unofficial groups of concerned citizens have sprung up, to advocate for a fair go, in their workplaces, in their communities and more.

Last night, the ZFA and Zionism Victoria were proud to have facilitated a discussion with a roomful of these activists, to talk about their advocacy efforts, and especially how it can build and strengthen Jewish and Zionist identity and Jewish community resilience 🙏🏽

Most Americans disapprove of Israel’s war in Gaza, poll finds — a downward shift in Americans’ opinions on the war. Many Americans also disapprove of the U.S. sending more aid to Israel for its military campaign, which has killed over 32,490 Palestinians. Read more: wapo.st/3VBej1B

ZFA’s new CEO Alon Cassuto in today’s The Australian Jewish News on his vision as he steers the organisation through a time of deep crisis:

Central to Cassuto's vision is the reaffirmation of Zionism - a movement he describes as "one of the most beautiful and profoundly impactful movements of self-determination the world has ever known".

"It's actually on us as Jews ... to do better at explaining what Zionism is - reclaiming Zionism because Zionism is not a slur word. And if we allow others to turn it into a slur, that's on us because we need to be able to own Zionism by knowing what it means to us," he said.
