Sprinter Origins: The Rise of a Conversion Van Legend

The Sprinter took off to a strong start back in 1995, when it received the International Van of the Year award. The van was only available in Europe for several years, until the North American Sprinter debuted in 2001 (originally branded by Dodge as the Freightliner).

Now on its second generation, the modern Sprinter has earned countless industry awards and is becoming increasingly popular for both commercial and recreational uses. All Sprinters sold in the U.S. are powered by BlueTec clean-diesel engines and the standard 4-cylinder engine is the world’s first diesel engine certified to SULEV emission standards.

Custom Sprinter Vans: Three Body Styles, Unlimited Options

Mercedes Benz continually improves on their classic Sprinter design chassis year after year, adding options and features that their customers demand such as extended cabs, four wheel drive, ultra high roofs, drivetrain upgrades, etc.

Our Sprinter campervans can be custom built from any Mercedes model options to fit your exact needs:

Sprinter Van Conversion FAQs

Q: How long will it take to get my van?
The exact length and height of a Sprinter van depends on which model, body style and configuration you choose. In general, these vehicles range in length from the standard model at 230 inches (around 19 feet) to extended van at 290 inches (24 ft). The height of the Sprinter depends on whether you choose the standard or high roof option, ranging from 95 inches (nearly 8 ft) to 108 inches (9 ft) – plenty tall enough for even a six-foot person to walk around upright inside.
Q: What kind of gas mileage does the Sprinter get?
Again, the exact gas mileage efficiency of your Sprinter depends on which model you have as well as what custom features you add to it and how much cargo you haul. While there are currently no official EPA figures for the Sprinter, Mercedes estimates the gas mileage to be in the high 20s. Diesel engines are up to 30 percent more efficient than standard gasoline vehicles, so the Sprinter undoubtedly gets better gas mileage than most of its competitors.
Q: What safety features are available on the Sprinter van?
The Sprinter boasts many standard safety features such as:

  • Anti-lock brakes
  • Load-adaptive stability control
  • Acceleration slip regulation
  • Electronic brake-force distribution
  • Hydraulic brake assist
  • Rollover mitigation
  • Rollover protection
  • Roll Movement Intervention
  • Enhanced understeering control
  • Automatic brake-disc drying system (brake disc wiping) when driving in the rain
  • Electronic brake prefill
  • Trailer stability assist (if a trailer hitch is included)

Many other safety options are available as well, including Crosswind Assist – a standard on 2500 models.

Q: How much does a Mercedes Sprinter van cost?
The base price for a new Sprinter van ranges anywhere from $33K to $56K, depending on the model, body style and configuration you choose. Any conversions or customizations you make to the original model will be an additional cost. The final price of a new or used Sprinter conversion van which has already been customized will be calculated based on the upgrades and custom features it has been given.
Q: Where are Sprinter vans made?
Traditionally, Sprinter vans have been manufactured by Daimler AG in Düsseldorf, Germany, then taken apart and reassembled in the U.S. However, Mercedes-Benz recently announced the opening of a new Sprinter factory in North Charleston, South Carolina.
Q: What class is a Mercedes Sprinter van?
The Sprinter is lightweight commercial vehicle that falls into the category of Class B or Class C motorhomes. Sprinter-based RVs are much smaller than Class A motorcoaches as well as more maneuverable and less expensive.
Q: What can a Sprinter be used for?
Almost anything, really. Sprinters are increasingly becoming common among outdoor enthusiasts for camping, gear transport and road trips. Businesses also prefer the commercial Sprinter Cargo van for its large cargo space, while transportation companies choose the 12-passenger Sprinter for luxury travel. Sprinters have even seen a growth of popularity in the general lifestyle sector as more families ditch the minivan in favor of a more spacious and luxurious conversion van.
Q: Where can I buy a Sprinter campervan?
You can find Sprinter vans for sale from Mercedes dealerships and third-party dealers all over the country. However, we recommend purchasing a custom Sprinter from a reliable, trustworthy conversion van dealer like Classic Vans – America’s #1 custom van dealer!
