Pilates Brooklyn

At the official Body in Balance™ Pilates Studio in Cobble Hill Brooklyn, our Personal Pilates classes focus on improving flexibility, strength, balance correcting bad postures and overall health. Short muscles get longer and weak muscles get stronger, without building bulk. Your spine and muscles will enjoy a sense of flexible freedom, comfort and length right after your first Pilates session. You will also become more aware of your body, dramatically improving your posture, releasing neck, shoulder, back pain and tightness with coordination and core awareness.

Unlike traditional exercises that overload and bulk the large muscles in the body, Pilates will strengthen smaller muscles to support your movement and create your Body in Balance™ which stems from your core abdominal muscles. Lou emphasizes good posture, flexibility, upper body strength and serious core strength. She insists on accuracy, so get ready for her corrections.

Pilates enables you to use your own resistance and strength with fewer more precise fluid movements. Since Pilates requires concentration and proper form on each exercise, the Pilates Method becomes a total mind/body experience, with mental health advantages as well. You also get to leave your busy world behind for your special hour. 🙂

“It’s the mind itself which shapes the body.” ~ Joseph Pilates

Joseph H. Pilates designed his series of controlled exercises, engaging the body and mind, for the floor and on specifically designed exercise apparatus. While rehabilitating disabled people during World War I… Joseph Pilates began to create his exercise regime that he is famous for today. He attached springs to hospital beds to provide resistance which helped the patients regain back their strength and flexibility.

His work quickly gained popularity with dance legends such as Martha Graham, Balachaine, Alvin Ailey and many others. Although the Fitness Industry and Medical Profession took a long time to finally recognize the benefits of this amazing discipline, many dancers have considered Pilates an integral part of their training for many years. Lou was fortunate to learn dance and fitness in Los Angeles where many of her teachers incorporated  the Pilates Method in their group classes and their personal training classes.

Joseph Pilates demonstrates the one leg rowing series on the Pilates Reformer. To be able to execute this kind of exercise on a moving Reformer bed you would need balance, control , strength and strong core muscles, which you will be able to achieve after training with Lou. Core training, performed and progressed properly, is fundamental to injury prevention and human movement and performance.

Joseph Pilates also called the Pilates Method, Contrology, which develops the body uniformly, corrects wrong postures, restores physical vitality, invigorates the mind, and elevates the spirit.
