Natural Filtration

Our safe, non-toxic biofiltration process harnesses the natural cycle of biodegradation. The process begins with foul air being dispersed through the biofilter. Microbes residing in the filter then consume and oxidize the odorous compounds, releasing clean air through the surface.

Application Type

Odors and emissions are neutralized at a wide range of sources, from wastewater treatment facilities to food processing and pet food production.

Surface Options

We offer various surface options for covering your biofilters, such as moisture-retaining rock, grass lawns, native plantings, and drivable surfaces.

Bohn Biofilter raised Solution

The Bohn Biofiltration system is almost autonomous. It responds quickly to gas loading changes throughout the day, seasonally, and during high-loading events. The stable microbial populations and steady airflow lead to reliable performance that our clients can depend on daily.

Biofilter Media

A blend of sands, soils, and topsoil creates a stable natural environment for microbes and a large surface area for adsorption of gases.

2

Cover Layer

Our cover layer reduces surface evaporation and can include any number of options: decorative rock, grass or lawn, native-plantings, or even a drivable surface.

3

Plenum Rock Layer

The plenum rock layer helps to evenly distribute the airflow.

4

Raised Flooring

The raised flooring system supports the plenum area below and provides a large surface area. It has a high load bearing capacity and is extremely durable.

5

Corrosion Resistant Ductwork

The fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP) above-ground ductwork provides a durable and long-lasting source of airflow transmission. Includes various fittings such as dampers, sampling ports, and transitions.

6

Odor Control Fan

The fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP) corrosion resistant fan (or blower) draws foul air from the odor source(s) and pushes it through the biofilter media.

7

Irrigation System

A sprinkler irrigation system maintains moisture throughout the media profile.

8

Sound Enclosure

An optional sound enclosure provides sound attenuation of the foul air fan.

9

Grease Filter

An optional grease filter screens out airborne solids (fats, oils, and greases).

4

Air Distribution Pipe

Small perforations in the air distribution pipe provides just enough back pressure for even air distribution throughout the biofilter bed. The higher porosity of the plenum rock layer further promotes even air distribution.

5

Pipe Clean-Outs

Pipe clean-outs are installed at grade to allow access to the air distribution pipe for CCTV inspection or cleaning.

9

Geomembrane Liner

The geomembrane liner separates the biofilter media from the native soil and collects excess water and leachate directing it back to the drain.

10

Sound Enclosure

An optional sound enclosure provides sound attenuation of the foul air fan.

Grease Filter

An optional grease filter screens out airborne solids (fats, oils, and greases).

About Us

Bohn Biofilter launched in 1986, with a filtration system backed by science, and developed over years of research and testing. Our founder, soil chemist Hinrich Bohn, PhD, studied the incredible qualities of soil as a biofilter medium for over 30 years, and is now a nationally recognized expert on biofiltration.

With hundreds of systems already installed, our product works tirelessly at removing odors and emissions from wastewater treatment plants, landfills, food processors, petroleum facilities and industrial solvent works. Our biofilters give reliable results for clients across the globe, even in some of the most diverse climate conditions, such as Phoenix and Shanghai.

Our team is dedicated to providing a product that is both environmentally responsible and meets the highest expectations. We offer the peace of mind of a solution that practically works by itself.
