Was really sad to learn this week of the passing of pioneering UK DJ Roger Johnson - He was the very first world champion in the DMC World Mixing Championships in 1985 . Roger had incredible skills on the decks and was amazing to watch and listen to
When I created the BBC's First Hip Hop Show " A Fresh Start To The Week" I invited Roger to be part of the show and do live mixes each week. I had been inspired by Marly Marl's Mixes on Mr Magic's New York WBLS Show so I got Roger to emulate that vibe, he would do live Hip Hop Mixes in the show and he would cut and scratch live on air but in a really musical way creating a new track in real time - using elements of lots of records all on vinyl all completely live - The first time anything like this had been done on BBC Radio ! His RJ Scratch Attacks soon became a cult listen.
We had some crazy times Roger used to drive me to all my gigs and we got in a few mad situations over the years including one gig where gangstars took over the club and took away the decks while I was djing. As well as Djing Roger had great music production skills
When Scott La Rock was tragically shot dead in New York Roger joined me in the studio to contribute a remix track on the Boogie Down Productions KRS One + Scott La Rock "Criminal Minded" tribute album on New Yorks B-Boy records.
When the underground UK rave scene took off Roger was in his element, he became a top DJj on the scene and earned a new legion of fans for his mixing and dj skills as he championed new styles and sounds in this exciting new emerging music scene. He also worked his magic in the recording studio - I got him to remix various tracks on my Reachin' records Rave label and he bought in really cool tracks like Boneshakers - Don't Go Away which became an underground rave anthem for many. When I became director of Urban Records at Polydor I got him to go back in the studio and do a final tweak on seminal house track Jimi Polo - Better Days before we released it- Roger went on to have more success in the studio engineering for different artists and even ended up touring with Moby.
A few years back I got back in the studio with Roger to do a BBC 6 Music special looking back at our Hip Hop Days 25 years earlier you can find it on the BBC iplayer - some of our old BBC Radio London shows have been posted by fans on youtube - I hope one day to get round to uploading some more archive. As well as being a great DJ Roger was a lovely guy with a wicked sense of humour and a great smile- I hope to to get round to doing a book some day and telling some of the stories of those early days. I have posted a video of Roger on the decks in 1986 on my Twitter and facebook ..... RIP Roger x big love to his friends and family.
