New National U17 Record

Alex Smith has set a new U17 national record for the 5k hammer of 76.52m at the British Schools International in Chelmsford. This performance breaks a 20 year old record previously held by Andrew Tolputt.
Emeka Udechuku threw a massive personal best of 64.93m in the discus at the Loughborough European Athletics Permit Meeting yesterday. This surpasses the A standard for the Olympic Games. Well done Emeka!
Not hammer-related - but I think it definately deserves a mention.

Recent World Results
International
Ivan Tikhon set a world leading performance of 83.97m at the Belarussian championships (8-10th July). Igor Astapkovich, now in his forties, threw 82.23 for third position. Olga Tsander also of Belarus produced a performance of 74.72m in the womens', a national record which could make her a threat for the Olympic title.
Olli-Pekka Karjalainen of Finland, former world junior champion, has now thrown 83.30m. This could make him a serious contender for the Olympic title in Athens.

AAA Championships and Olympic Trials
Women Hammer Final - 16:05, Saturday 10th July Men Hammer Final - 16:15, Sunday 11th July
At the time of writing there are still some tickets available for the Saturday, Sunday is sold out. Good luck to all who are competing.
Yipsi Moreno has proven her form for the Olympic Games by unleashing a throw of 75.06m in Padua (Italy) on 4th July. It is Moreno's 3rd time over 75m in her career.
Ivan Tikhon has set a world leading mark of 83.36m in Stayki, Belarus on 26th June 2004. This superseeds the mark of 82.65m which was set by Koji Murofushi earlier this year at the Prefontaine Classic.
Lorraine Shaw has finally qualified for the Olympics by achieving the A standard with a throw of 67.85m at Varazdin on Saturday. Shirely Webb has consolidated on her early season performance with a throw of 66.75m at the UK Women's league competition held at Alexander Stadium, Birmingham. Unfortunately Mick Jones has so far been unable to throw the Olympic qualifying distance of 74m.

U20 / U23 AAA's Results
Some excellent performances - Laura Douglas was able to regain her Welsh Record. The winners of each category are shown below:
U23 W: Laura Douglas 60.13m U23 M: Carl Saggers 63.17 (CBP) U20 W: Susan McKelvie 55.28m U20 M: Alex Smith 65.79 (CBP)
Former world champion and reigning Olympic champion Szymon Ziolkowski is ready to defend his Olympic title after obtaining the qualifying mark. Ziolkowski has had problems finding form in recent years and there were rumours of a bust-up with his coach. His performance of 79.41m proves that he is now ready to compete on the world stage again.
Olli-Pekka Karjalainen has thrown himself into medal contention in setting a new Finnish record of 82.15m. Karjalainen was formerly the world junior champion. This distance places him third overall in the world mens rankings.
Current World Rankings: 1. Adrian Annus (hungary) 82.59m 2. Koji Murofushi (Japan) 82.18m 3. Olli-Pekka Karjalainen (finland) 82.15m

Loughborough International Results
Carys Parry takes the welsh record with a distance of 59.80m, this surpasses the former record which was claimed by Laura Douglas just weeks ago. Shirely Webb was the winner of the competition with 62.09m.
In the mens competition Alex Smith threw a PB of 57.67m with the senior hammer. The competition was won by Mick Jones with a modest throw of 72.39m. Mick still has yet to qualify for the olympic games.
