MC Federal Awards Two Scholarships to Local Students

The MC Federal Credit Union Scholarship Program was established to provide educational funds for members. MC Federal awards two $1,000 scholarships each year to high school seniors or continuing higher education students. In order to qualify for consideration in the program, applicants must be current members of MC Federal Credit Union in good standing with a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA. The MC Federal Scholarship Selection Committee then chooses winners based on their submitted 200-word essay pertaining to the topic provided by the credit union. This year’s selected topic was, “Credit unions depend on a strong sense of community and service. How will you apply these ideals during your upcoming college years?”

MC Federal is happy to announce this year’s winners, Noah Moyer and Katie Bonomo.

Noah Moyer: Noah is a graduating from Columbia Montour AVTS and will be attending Bloomsburg University. His essay focused on his current passion for service and how he plans to continue that service throughout his upcoming college experience.

Katie Bonomo: Katie is graduating from Danville Area High School and will be attending Shippensburg University. In her essay, Katie talked about joining service organizations and serving as an RA in her residence hall with the goal of helping other students feel welcome.

MC Federal Credit Union is proud to offer this opportunity to alleviate a piece of the financial burden these students will experience as they continue to further their education. Elba Arenas, President and CEO said, “Congratulations to our young MC members. We look forward to celebrating with you as you continue to experience all of life’s milestones! Best of luck as you continue on your educational journey.”

MC Federal Financial Wellness Program Earns National Award

MC Federal Credit Union is proud to announce that we have been awarded the 2022 National CUNA Desjardins Adult Financial Education Award. The award recognizes leadership within the credit union movement on behalf of financial literacy for members and nonmembers of all ages. The award, named after credit union pioneer Alphonse Desjardins, emphasizes the movement’s longtime commitment to financial education.

This award was earned by Elba Arenas, President & Chief Member Experience Officer and her Financial Wellness Team who use their financial expertise and life experience to delivery our program, The Road to Financial Wellness. Our approach to financial literacy delivers targeted solutions for each community we serve. The program prioritizes topics that build accountability, independence, and confidence in the class attendees. The topics focus on real-world applications of financial skills that provide a solid financial foundation for the future. There are six classes, each of which covers a different topic. These topics include understanding accounts and fees, an intro to lending, budgeting, credit cards vs. debit cards, understanding your credit report and credit score, and identity theft and fraud. The classes are customized to meet the needs of each individual in order to provide the best financial wellbeing information for all of the participant. Our newly expanded course has been taught in partnership with local schools, The Getting Ahead Foundation, Union County Probation, and The Northumberland County Jail. We seek to overcome the barriers set forth by factors such as race, age, and gender and make free financial education available to every member of our community.
