A True Help for Migraine Headaches Associated with Your Period

Migraine Headaches Associated with the Cycle Get Relief with Progesterone Cream. See our new website on Migraine Headaches (click here!).

Taking Natural Progesterone Cream and avoiding xenoestrogens can give migraine headaches relief. Seventy percent of women with migraines experience them during their cycles. Since women make up 75 percent of migraine sufferers, the female hormone estrogen is thought to play a certain role in triggering the migraine headache. Too much estrogen relative to progesterone (estrogen dominance) can lead to the vessels in the brain to dilate. This dilation of vessel in the brain is thought to be related to estrogen dominance (too much estrogen). For example, the estrogen in birth control pills can trigger a migraine headache. A migraine headache is a known listed side effect of birth control pills. Now, recent research since the 1990's has found that some of the 85,000 chemicals in use in the United States also have hormonal effects that happen to imitate estrogen. In other words, chemicals previously thought to be inert, have hormonal effects. These effects are largely unknown and currently unmeasured. exercising woman with migraine headache Now, Time magazine has cited the landmark study of 17,000 girls aged 8. 15% of these girls are going through early puberty and sprouting breast buds and pubic hair. The Time magazine cover story, October 30, 2000, cites that some chemicals mimic estrogen and blames these chemicals for the early growth spurt of girls and early puberty.

Ranchers also give estrogen to cattle and farmers give estrogen to chicken with the full knowledge that the estrogen will cause the animal to grow and mature faster. The chemical manufacturers and ranchers claim that the estrogen will wash out of the animals system in 3 days. However, estrogen is fat soluble and some scientists feel that it may take as long as a year for the synthetic estrogen to wash out of the animal's system. The European Union claims that giving estrogen to animals and then eating the meat may increase the breast cancer rate and refuses to buy Canadian and United States meat. Critics of the European Union say that this is merely protectionist. Or is it?

Migraine headaches associated with the cycle are also associated with Pre Syndrome (PMS). (See the website www.goodbyepms.com). The hallmark of Pre Syndrome is weight gain just before your period. This weight gain is caused by water retention. Another diagnostic sign is breast tenderness that happens just before the cycle. For some, body temperature is depressed to about 97F because the excess estrogen decreases the sensitivity of the thyroid receptor. Chocolate craving just before the period is also a sign of pre syndrome. Too much estrogen will cause a magnesium deficiency. Chocolate is a food that is one of the highest in magnesium. A deficiency in magnesium causes muscle tensing. This muscular tensing affects the muscular sheath that surrounds the arteries. Thus, the mangnesium deficiency secondary to Estrogen Dominance may contribute to migraine headaches. Chocolate is a problem because it is also estrogenic.

Mainstream medicine readily acknowledges that excess estrogen causes endometrial (uterine) cancer and most breast cancers. The incidence of breast cancer in the 1950's was 1 out 20 women in the USA. The incidence of breast cancer in 1988 was 1 out of 11 women in the USA. The incidence of breast cancer in 2001 was 1 out of 8 women in the USA. Could xenoestrogens play a contributary role in the increase in incidence in these estrogen sensitive cancers? Many researchers suspect that these xenoestrogens are contributing to breast cancer and endometrial cancer. Researchers are now trying to find an environmental cause for a breast cancer cluster in Long Island, New York.

Very few studies have assessed the effect of HRT (hormone replacement therapy) on migraine. What has been found is that migraine is more likely to improve with the use of non-oral oestrogens such as patches or gels (I have not looked at the original studies, but the estrogen used in some patches is natural estrogen NOT synthetic estrogen). Too high an oestrogen dose can trigger migraine aura, which typically resolves with a reduction in dose. Thus, it would seem that excess estrogen would promote migraine headaches.

In general, estrogen and progesterone oppose each other. Estrogen tells the cells to multiply and proliferate. Estrogen slows down the body, and builds up fat (around the hips) in preparation for the pregnancy. Progesterone maintains the pregnancy. It tells the cells to mature differentiate and NOT to multiply. It tells the body to use the fat. Under progesterone stimulation the fat is burned up and reduced.

The treatment strategy to get rid of migraine is to get rid of the xenoestrogens in your life, AND take Natural Progesterone. These xenoestrogens mimic estrogen and cause bloating and cyclical breast tenderness. Get rid of the chemicals that mimic estrogen and bloating and cyclical breast tenderness stops. These xenoestrogens are fat soluble and are stored in the body fat. Sometimes it takes years to get rid of these chemicals out of the body fat. However, the elimination of these fat soluble xenoestrogens may be speeded up by sauna and exercise that heats up the body so you sweat. Taking Natural Progesterone in the mean time will oppose estrogen and make you feel better reducing or eliminating the bloating and cyclical breast tenderness.

Natural progesterone is NOT the same estrogen and progestin in prescription birth control pills.  Natural progesterone is NOT the same as Provera or Megestrol.  These prescription hormones are chemically modified from the natural hormones to be different in order to be patented, have a monopoly, and then can be sold at a large profit. Any hormone or chemical found in nature cannot be patented by law. Since these prescription chemically modified hormones are NOT naturally found in nature or in the body, they have many potentially dangerous side effects.  In contrast, natural progesterone is bioidentical to the hormone in your body, and is compatible with the human body with a minimal amount of side effects. Natural Progesterone is on of the SAFE "herbal supplements" and can usually be found in the " dietary supplements vitamins for migraine headache " section of your health food store. Migraine symptoms can be prevented.

Migraine headaches sometimes becomes worse in the first trimester of pregnancy, but many women are migraine-free later in their pregnancy. Natural progesterone is the hormone of pregnancy. "Pro" means "for and "gesterone" refers to "gestation." During a women's normal cycle, the body produces 20 mg/day. At the last term of prgenancy, her body produces 400 mg/day of nautural progesterone. Obviously, for this type of migraine, there is a hormonal component.

If your blood sugar is not steady and goes extremely up and down, this will also trigger a migraine headache. The extreme varying of blood sugar causes a corresponding increase and decrese in blood insulin. The wide varying of blood insulin causes the release of epinephrine (adrenaline) and norephineprine (noradrenaline). The adrenaline and noradrenaline release causes the vessels in your brain to contract and expand. The vessels contracting and expanding is implicated in causing a migraine headache.

Here again, estrogen dominance has been shown to cause insulin resistance[1]. Women taking estrogen had a 31 percent lower utilization rate of insulin compared to postmenopausal women not on estrogen replacement therapy. [2] In other words, excess estrogen causes your body to become less sensitive to insulin. Thus, for a given sugar load your body has to produce more insulin. More variation in insulin, more variation in adrenaline and noradrenaline, more vessel expansion and contraction gives rise to more migraine headache.

The link to estrogen dominance as a contributor to diabetes type II and insulin resistance is clearly seen in the side effects of birth control pills. Some diabetes type II women blood sugars are greatly affected by birth control pills. Also anecdotally, many women that I have treated with natural progesterone have been able to lower their requirements for their diabetes medication.

Chrominum (most absorbable in the form of Chromium Picolinate) is used in active transport of sugar across cell membranes. 90% of the people in North and South America are chromium deficient. There are no chromium deposits in North and South America. Thus, chromium is not in the food chain and food supply of North and South America. There is chromium in Europe, Africa, and South East Asia, but no chromium in North and South America. Thus, the only place that an American will get chromium is from a vitamin bottle.

Skipping breakfast, having a chocolate bar for lunch while shopping frantically with your friends at the mall plays havoc with your blood sugar and will contribute to migraine headaches.

Foods that contain tyramine such as certain red wines, chocolate, cheeses, and foods that contain nitrates (preserved meat), and overripe bananas have also been implicated in migraine headaches. Some people have had food sensitivities that seemed to triger migraine headaches.

Topical Natural Progesterone Cream applied to the skin as the main source of progesterone is over the counter as an " herbal supplement " for migraines and may be obtained without a prescription. In addition, natural progesterone suspended in an edible vegetable oil is used by some patients under the tongue when they feel a migraine headache coming on. These patients claim that this progesterone oil (one source is Women's Therapeutic Institute) under the tongue (sublingual) progesterone oil can lessen the severity or alleviate the migraine headache. These patients use natural progesterone on the skin as the primary route of administration and then add sublingual progesterone when they feel migraine symptoms starting to develop. These patients find that they can head off a migraine headache with under the tongue progesterone oil.

Caution: You must make sure to avoid xenoestrogens. If you do NOT avoid xenoestrogens and take natural progesterone, the migraine headache may worsen TEMPORARILY. This is because the natural progesterone resensitizes the estrogen receptors back to normal. Long term chronic xenoestrogen exposure causes the estrogen receptors to be desensitized.

In 5-10% of women taking Natural Progesterone by topical application, the women do not absorb the progesterone well and oral Natural Progesterone may be used.  Also Natural Progesterone Cream may not stop the migraine headache from regressing because xenoestrogens are not eliminated from the person's lifestyle, or the xenoestrogens are stored in the body fat.

Migraine Headaches NOT Associated with the Cycle

The drug, Imitrex, is the most prescribed migraine medication in America for migraine headaches. Imitrex is considered to be an antihistamine and a serotonin enhancer. Serotonin is a vasoconstrictor. Histamine is a vasodilator. Pastor Henry Wright in Atlanta, Georgia claims that he has had very good success treating migraines without drugs. Migraines not associated with the cycle is caused by reduction in the secretion of serotonin and an increase of histamine secretion. Wright claims that this is triggered by guilt resulting from conflict in your life in conjunction with fear. He claims that it's NOT the confict itself that triggers the migraine. It's the conflict you have with yourself over the conflict that triggers the migraine, either real or imagined. You may have guilt because you think you spent too much money, and you got into an arguement with your husband about how much you spent. The arguement is NOT what causes the migraine. It's the guilt that you have with yourself that produces the migraine. Wright claims that that all migraine headaches are rooted in guilt. Out of guilt comes fear. Out of guilt comes self-hatred causing the pineal gland to reduce secretion of serotonin. Then fear allows histamine to be oversecreted. Thus, a reduction in serotonin and increase histamine is attained. Thus, Wright claims the combination of guilt and fear produces a migraine headache.

Pastor Henry Wright resides at Pleasant Valley Church in Atlanta, Georgia. They have monthly conferences and books. Pleasant Valley church's phone number is (706)646-2074.

Lessen the Severity of Your Migraine

Dr. Lee Successfully Lessens the Severity of Migraines

Dr. Lee further writes in his book:

" Migraines are serious headaches, most often occurring only on one side of the head, which are often preceeded by a vague sense (aura) that the sufferer learns to recognize as an impending migraine headache symptom. Migraines are thought to be related to overdilation coffee of blood vessels in the brain. They very likely have an allergic or chemically mediated trigger and are related to stress. They vary in severity, sometimes becoming almost unendurable without narcotic medication, and can be accompanied by nausea and vomiting. Routine treatment involves ergotamine medication (often combined with caffeine), which, to achieve success, may result in side effects of muscle pains, numbness and tingling in the fingers and toes, rapid (or slowed) heart rate, and nausea and vomiting. Migraine victims live in fear of the next headache.

"When migraine headaches occur with regularity in women only right before the menses, they are most likely due to estrogen dominance. They are the lucky patients."

John Lee, M.D.

When migraine headaches occur with regularity in women only before menstruation, they are most likely due to estrogen dominance. They are the lucky patients. Estrogen causes the dilation of blood vessels, and thus contributes to the cause(s) of migraines. One of the many virtues of natural progesterone is that it helps restore the normal vascular tone, counteracting the blood vessel dilation that causes the headache. Here again, the " herbal supplement " progesterone is safe and treats the cause in a normal, physiologic way. The more dangerous phamaceutical drugs can be reserved for the rare case that does not respond completely to progesterone."

"As mentioned earlier, when migraine headaches occur just before menses in women, they are often caused by estrogen dominance. Estrogen causes dilation of blood vessels, and thus contributes to the cause(s) of migraines. Natural Progesterone helps restore normal vascular tone, counteracting the blood vessel dilation that causes the headache. If you have migraines, try using progesterone during the ten days that preceedes these headaches. If one occurs, you can apply a small glob (1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon) every three to four hours until your symptoms subside. This commonly requires only one or two extra applications. Higher doses of progesterone can be reached quickly with sublingual drops (progesterone in Vitamin E oil [progesterone dissolved in vegetable oil will also work]), which is more rapidly absorbed (within minutes) than skin cream (usually within the hour or so), and thus may be more effectve."

From my women patients, I learned that [ migraine headaches were associated with] Pre Syndrome, PMS, was most often a sign of estrogen dominance. I also recommend adding vitamin E in dosages of 600 IU at bedtime, supplemental magnesium (300 milligrams a day), and vitamin B6 (50 milligrams per day)*. This treatment is simple, safe, inexpensive, successful, and natural."

*Whole grains also regulate hormonal levels due to their high levels of vitamin B and vitamin E, which have a beneficial effect on both the liver and the ovaries. In 1942, a researcher named Biskind found that B vitamin deficiency hindered the liver's ability to metabolize estrogen levels in both animal and human test subjects. The addition of B vitamin supplementation to the diet of women suffering from PMS, heavy bleeding, and fibrocystic breast disease helped to decrease the severity of their symptoms. Studies conducted at UCLA Medical School during the 1980s found that taking a specific B vitamin, pyridoxine B6, helped to relieve symptoms of cramps and PMS.

Research also conducted during the 1980s at Johns Hopkins University Medical Center similarly found, in several placebo controlled studies, that vitamin E is useful in reducing many PMDD symptoms, as well as fibrocystic breast discomfort. Other studies have found that vitamin E supplementation reduced menopause related hot flashes, fatigue, and mood swings in 66 to 85 percent of the women tested, depending on the study. One additional study noted a decrease in the symptoms of vaginal atrophy in 50 percent of the postmenopausal women volunteers.
