The Nashua Area Radio Society is a group of New England Ham Radio enthusiasts with a wide range of interests. Our organization’s  mission is to:

  • Encourage and help people to become licensed and active in the Amateur Radio Service
  • Spark Interest among young people in STEM Education and Careers through Amateur Radio
  • Provide training and mentoring to enable Amateur Radio Operators to improve their technical and operating skills and to be prepared to assist in times of emergency
  • Sponsor on-air operating activities so that Amateurs may practice and fully develop their operating skills and have fun with Ham Radio!

Plans For Online Meetings and Tech Nights

To this end, we will open our Membership Meetings and Tech Nights to include our Internet Subscribers, and we are also inviting all US-based Hams to join us online for these meetings. We will have our usual excellent speakers for these meetings, and they will deliver live presentations and conduct Q&A online.

Here is a summary of our planned meetings:

  • Tuesday, April 2nd, 7 pm Eastern – Nashua Area Radio Society Regular Meeting. Our speakers will be Bob Glorioso, W1IS and Bob Rose, KC1DSQ, and their presentation will be The In’s and Out’s of End Fed Antennas.  The meeting will be online via Zoom as well as at the Nashua Library in the NPL Theater.   Our pre-meeting get-together begins at 6:45 pm.   • Tuesday, April 9th, 7 pm Eastern – Nashua Area Radio Society Tech Night.  Our Tech Night topic is Portable Operation and POTA and the speakers will be the Nashua Area Radio Society POTA Tiger Team. Ham Bootcamp includes a series of demonstrations and tutorials designed to help newly licensed Technician, General, and Extra class license holders get on the air and use their amateur radio license. Bootcamp is also a great opportunity for prospective Hams who are interested in seeing what the hobby has to offer.

Our Spring 2024 Technician, General, and Extra License classes are scheduled, and registration is open. We will be offering online license exams for class students! You can learn more about our Classes here.

Support STEM Learning Through Amateur Radio

We have begun a fundraising campaign to enable us to continue and expand our training projects such as our High-Altitude Balloon projects, electronics kit projects, license training, our Amateur Radio Expositions for Young People, and other projects. In addition, your donations support our STEM learning experiences for young people and equipment and training for emergency communications readiness. We hold regular Meetings, Tech Nights, License Classes and Youth Activities, and other events to provide training experiences and to enable our members to realize our mission. The Nashua Area Radio Society is a 501c(3) non-profit organization dedicated to STEM Education through Amateur Radio and to the development of radio communications skills and Emergency Preparedness through Amateur Radio.

The Nashua Area Radio Society is widely recognized for its work in mentoring and Development of Amateur Radio skills among members and within our community here in New Hampshire.

We’ve created an option to enable Hams and potential Hams to take advantage of our training materials and learning forums here on our website. Our Internet Subscription is available to everyone who lives in the United States and outside of the states of New Hampshire and Massachusetts for a small yearly donation that supports our programs.

High-Altitude Balloon Launch 4 Video

We launched High-Altitude Balloon 4 to the edge of space again this past Sunday, June 9th. During HAB-4’s flight, we capture the balloon bursting at an altitude of over 103,000 ft! The resulting burst video follows below.

Hudson Memorial School ISS Crew Contact

The Nashua Area Radio Society helped students at Hudson Memorial School in Hudson, NH to make a live contact via Amateur Radio with Serena Aunon-Chancellor on the International Space Station. This once in a lifetime opportunity was made possible via a joint effort between Dan Pooler, AC1EN and other Faculty Members at Hudson Memorial School, the ARISS, and NASA. Field Day 2018

The Nashua Area Radio Society was part of the 2018 ARRL Field Day event this weekend. We have a long history of participation in Field Day and you can read more about some of our previous Field Day operations here.

We had great media coverage at our Field Day operation this year including reporters from two TV channels here in New Hampshire. A story about our Field Day operation was shown on the WMUR Manchester Newscast at 6 pm last evening. You can view the TV news story above.

Field Day is about training and emergency preparedness, learning about new communications technology, and having fun!

STEM Learning via Our High Altitude Balloon (HAB) Projects

The Nashua Area Radio Society made its way to the edge of space and back again for the third time on June 3rd, 2018! You can read more about our launch here.

We did another HAB launch in October of last year. Students in our STEM Program launched our High Altitude Balloon (HAB) from Winchester, NH and successfully recovered in from a pond in Maine.

A View From  HAB-1 From The Edge Of Space – Over 90,000 ft

Our HAB carries a 2m APRS transmitter which sends our HAB’s position and other telemetry data to the ground during its flight.  HAB-1 flew to 91,650 ft in about 3 hours and 10 minutes. HAB-2 flew to 117,932 ft in about 2 hours and 30 minutes. The descent took about an hour for both HAB-1 and HAB-2. Here is a picture from the 2nd camera on the HAB-1 looking up at the balloon just before it bursts.

Having Fun and Learning Through Ham Radio

We have a lot of fun with and learn valuable skills through Ham Radio as part of our many activities. We really enjoy getting on the air and making contacts!

Our activities include our annual Field Day operation where we practice our emergency station building and operating skills. We have sponsored or participated in many on-air activities such a Summits On The Air (SOTA), Parks On The Air (POTA), and ARRL National Parks On The Air. We also hold weekly repeater nets and HF nets. Everyone is welcome to join us and participate in our on-the-air activities.
