I got to drive the all-new Mazda CX-90 (gas version) earlier this year, and it’s one of my favorite cars.
Last week, I got to try out the plug-in hybrid version that offers about 25 miles of all-electric miles, which should work for people with short commutes who can plug in at the office, and later at home, allowing them to drive gas-free. Mazda says if you use a 240-volt power source at home, you can charge up to 80 percent in three hours, and overnight would give you a full charge. Read moreUpscale everywhere with plush roominess

Covering former President Donald Trump’s trial on television is a difficult job. The United Auto Workers union announced it reached a last-minute tentative agreement with truck and bus manufacturer Daimler Truck on Friday evening, averting a potential strike of more than 7,000 workers. The union struck a four-year agreement with the German company just before the expiration of the previous contract, which was enacted six years ago. It covers workers at various plants in North Carolina — where Daimler makes Thomas Built Buses, Freightliner and Western Star trucks — as well as workers at distribution plants in Atlanta and Memphis, Tennessee. UAW President Shawn Fain says the new contract includes wage increases of more than 25% over the next four years and cost-of-living adjustments, among other things. Union members still need to approve the agreement.
An American Airlines flight attendant has been indicted after authorities say he tried to secretly video record a 14-year-old girl using an airplane bathroom. A federal grand jury on Thursday indicted 36-year-old Estes Carter Thompson III, of Charlotte, North Carolina. Police say he also had recordings of four other girls using lavatories on an aircraft where he worked. Thompson was indicted on one count of attempted sexual exploitation of children and one count of possession of images of child sexual abuse depicting a prepubescent minor. He remains in federal custody.
Planned Parenthood affiliated groups have announced a $10 million voter engagement campaign in North Carolina for the 2024 election. Organizers said in a Thursday news conference that the money will go toward things like canvassing, mailers and digital ads. The funding comes as abortion-rights advocates seek to end a Republican supermajority at the General Assembly that approved new restrictions last year and to prevent the election of anti-abortion gubernatorial candidate Mark Robinson. Planned Parenthood Votes spokesperson Emily Thompson says the amount marks the largest campaign investment ever made by Planned Parenthood entities in North Carolina.
Early in-person voting has started across North Carolina for next month’s runoff elections, including one congressional contest and two statewide primary races. Early voting sites opened in all 100 counties Thursday and will be available through May 11. The runoff election day is May 14. Voters in part are choosing this fall’s Republican nominees for lieutenant governor, state auditor and the 13th Congressional District seat. These runoffs are happening because the candidate with the most votes in the March primary failed to get more than 30 percent of the vote.

A senior Qatari official has urged both Israel and Hamas to show “more commitment and more seriousness” in cease-fire negotiations. Qatar hosts Hamas headquarters in Doha and has been a key intermediary. Qatar’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson told Israeli media that both Israel and Hamas have made decisions based on political interests and not with the good of civilians in mind. Pressure is building on both sides to move toward a deal that would free some hostages and bring a cease-fire in the nearly seven-month-long war in Gaza. A deal also might avert or delay an Israeli invasion of the southern city of Rafah.
U.S. police departments have reported a year-over-year increase in sworn officers for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic and the police killing of George Floyd. A survey released by the Police Executive Research Forum shows more officers were hired in 2023 than in any of the previous four years. It also notes there were fewer retirements and resignations of officers among the 214 law enforcement agencies that responded. Forum Executive Director Chuck Wexler says departments appear to be turning the corner on hiring but aren't out of the woods yet. Departments saw an exodus of officers after the pandemic and Floyd's 2020 death at the hands of Minneapolis police officers.
Harvey Weinstein's lawyer says the onetime movie mogul has been hospitalized for a battery of tests after his return to New York City following an appeals court ruling nullifying his 2020 rape conviction. Attorney Arthur Aidala said Weinstein was moved to Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan after his arrival on Friday to city jails. On Thursday, the New York Court of Appeals vacated his conviction after concluding that a trial judge permitted too much evidence not directly related to the charges he faced. The 72-year-old Weinstein has been ailing with a variety of afflictions, including cardiac issues, diabetes, sleep apnea and eye problems.
Pope Francis has met with women prisoners in Venice who are the protagonists of the Vatican pavilion at the Venice Biennale art fair. He has urged them to use their time in prison as a chance for “moral and material rebirth.” Francis is in Venice for the morning to meet with the inmates and artists of this year's Biennale. The Vatican chose to stage its pavilion inside Venice’s women’s prison, and through a deal with the Italian Justice Ministry, invited inmates to work alongside the artists.
