Last week saw a series of impressive, impactful AP Capstone presentations take place in Powell Hall! Grade 12 students shared the highlights of their year-long original research projects with an audience of parents, administrators, teachers, and students; they were even joined by an SCS AP Research alum, Emily Suggitt ’22. These presentations marked the end of a two-year journey in the AP Capstone program, showcasing the exceptional skills they have developed as researchers and scholars. The varied topics they presented on included “Experiences that Shape Perceived Self-Efficacy at All-Girls Camps”, “Social and Cultural Integration of Chinese Teenagers in Canada”, and “The Relationship between Meal Consumption and Wellbeing.”
Also last week, Grade 11 students completing the AP Seminar course (part one of the two-year AP Capstone program) presented their Individual Research Projects. This required each student to choose, investigate, and develop an argument about a current, national, and urgent issue of equity and social justice. Their topic choice had to be inspired by a theme that connects at least two “Stimulus Sources” provided by the College Board – which this year featured big ideas like courage, fear, and moral disobedience. The students explored a variety of topics, including “Canadian Nuclear Waste Management and Indigenous Involvement”, “Education Barriers Facing Immigrant Students in Canada”, and “Medical Assistance in Dying for Mature Minors in Canada.”

One way that SCS seeks to foster a school community where members are known and valued is via several types of student forums. These forums, which include Affinity Groups (open to members of a particular identity), Open Alliances (open to everyone regardless of identity), and Brave Spaces (focused on education) are designed to encourage ongoing learning and to develop authentic allyship and support EDI-related issues and topics. Affinity Groups allow community members who share a common identity or an aspect of their identity—usually one that is marginalized or non-dominant—to gather and talk in a safe space about issues and experiences related to that identity. The Asian Students Affinity Group (ASAG) and the Black Students Affinity Group (BSAG) are two examples of affinity groups currently meeting regularly.

Recently, several students and staff identifying as APISA (Asian, Pacific-Islander, and South Asian) had the opportunity to travel to Atlanta, Georgia to attend the Asian Educators Alliance Student Conference. SCS was the only Canadian school in attendance – here’s a look at some of the highlights and key learnings from that experience!

The Grade 1 class stepped out to search for signs of spring today. (What a perfect day to do it!) Along for the discovery walk: Upper School Science Teacher Ms Sardone, who helped the curious Grade 1s discover all kinds of noteworthy signs of spring including a robin’s egg, and a type of flower no one in the class had ever seen before! 🪺🌱🪻
