About Our Founder

Denton A. Cooley, M.D., Founder and President Emeritus of The Texas Heart Institute (THI), made it his life’s work to conquer the challenges of cardiovascular disease, through research, education and clinical care. The professional practice he founded, Surgical Associates of Texas, P.A. (SATPA), served as the Cardiovascular Surgery Service at St. Luke’s Episcopal and Texas Children’s Hospitals for much of his illustrious and productive career. He established traditions both for THI and SATPA which laid the foundation for their future. Reflecting on his career in his own words, “our culture was one of encouragement and appreciation. Collectively, we took care of patients – their needs and progress were at the center of our efforts.” Those attributes remain the foundation and character of Surgical Associates of Texas, P.A.
