Description: The Department of Peace and Conflict Research was established in 1971 to conduct peace research and offer courses in peace and conflict studies. The Dag Hammarskjöld Chair of Peace and Conflict Research was the first in the Department and its first and present holder was appointed in 1985. In 2003, the holder of a second Chair, assumed the work as Professor. In addition to these chairs, assistant and associate professors, some 15 Ph. D. candidates, administrative, project, and technical staff, in all app. 50 persons are employed at the Department. At present some 200-300 students are enrolled every academic year. Courses offered include undergraduate and post-graduate courses, as well as a Ph. D. programme. The Department conducts research in several major areas of peace and conflict studies. Moreover, it houses its own data collection program – the internationally renowned Uppsala Conflict Data Program (UCDP) – which provides a unique freely and globally accessible dataset for frontline research around the world. Research pursued is both basic and applied, and some projects are policy-driven. There is expertise in most regions of the world. A range of quantitative and qualitative methods is used, and increasingly projects are multi-method. It is the most ‘complete’ research department of its kind in Scandinavia, and is internationally recognized as a leading institution in its field.In-house researchers come from several disciplines, the peace and conflict field being in itself interdisciplinary. Most research is externally funded and conducted within projects or programs, the two largest being the UCDP and the Conflict and Democracy Program. Generally speaking, most work falls into three areas: research on the causes and dynamics of conflict, on peace processes and on sustainable peace. While the Department retains a firm interest and competitive edge in the first area, its work on peace processes and sustainable peace has expanded in recent years.Research on the causes and dynamics of conflict includes work on direct and contributing reasons and motives, opportunities and risks, for armed as well as resource conflicts. Ongoing projects concern subjects such as: gender equality and collective violence; forced expulsion of civilians in internal armed conflicts; political systems, resource distribution and risks of civil war; and the escalation of ethnic conflict to war. Research on peace processes focuses on bargaining and negotiation (e.g., causes of and conditions for successful outcomes vs. failures, roles of violence and norms such as justice, and actors including mediators and spoilers), diasporas and their contributions to peace negotiations, third-party intervention and peacekeeping (e.g., effects of peacekeeping operations on host states’ gender relations), and the implementation of targeted sanctions. Work relating to requirements and conditions for sustainable peace is wide-ranging, and investigates the subject from many angles. Included here are projects on dilemmas of democratization in war-torn societies, reconciliation methods and peace-building after internal conflict, and on factors promoting or undermining the durability of peace agreements. Connected to this theme are also international and regional security issues; e.g., the role of international organizations and preconditions for creating “security communities.”A key aspect of the Department's research is its numerous and wide-ranging collaborations with internationally leading scholars and institutions within and outside Scandinavia and Sweden. It supports and collaborates with peace research milieus around the world, and works to develop a global network. It hosts and coordinates the Swedish Network of Peace, Conflict and Development Research, which has spurred national cooperation. In Uppsala collaboration takes place within the University's so-called 'Gamla Torget' inter-departmental forum. The Department recently developed a proposal for a joint research centre on ’societies in transition’ with the Departments of Government and Law
